ESPERANZA GAMA
In March 2008, Gama’s installation celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe, To the Queen of the Sun
and the Moon (2006), will open at the Chicago History Museum in a nine-month joint exhibition
on the history of Catholicism in the city.
Gama’s work is published in important surveys of Latino and Chicano art, such as Contemporary Chicana and Chicano Art, Arizona State University, 2002, and Chicano Art for Our Millenium, Arizona State University, 2004, as well as in exhibition catalogs such as Caras Vemos in 2006.
In 2003, Gama was awarded the Sor Juana Achievement Award for Visual Arts from the
Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, Chicago, and has received three Illinois Arts Council Partial
Support Grants: an International Program Grant to help produce her Stigma series of etchings
(2005); a Partial Support Grant for framing her Los Magicos I painting exhibition (2006); a
Residency Artists International Program Grant for her Los Magicos II series of etchings, which
were completed and printed in Guadalajara (2007).
